Patalsu Peak A Snow Summit Above Manali trek
03
Oct
Patalsu Peak is one of the most rewarding short winter treks in India. In four days from Solang near Manali, you walk through snow-laden oak and spruce forest, camp at the tree line under a clear sky and finish with a pre-dawn climb to a summit at about 13,944 ft (4,250 m). From the top you see Hanuman Tibba, Friendship Peak, Deo Tibba, Indrasan and the whole sweep of the Kullu valley.
It is graded easy to moderate, so it works as a first summit trek for fit beginners. Since it is a short trek with big altitude gain and winter conditions, it suits people who want a proper Himalayan winter trek without a week away. With ThinAirExpedition, you get a trained team, winter equipment and a plan around snow and weather.

Meet at [meeting point, time] and drive to Solang (about 7,914 ft). Rest and acclimatise. We suggest arriving in Manali the day before. [Add overnight arrangement]
You cross the Beas [describe current crossing] and climb through Solang village and its apple orchards. After about 500 m you enter forest, with Solang valley and the Bara Bangal range behind you. At around 4 km you reach the first big clearing (often called Shagadurg), then walk 2 km more to the tree line and the summit camp. It's a steep, steady climb, which snow makes slower. In winter the only reliable water source is about 500 m from camp and may freeze, so the team will plan [your winter water arrangement].
Start about two hours before sunrise to reach the top at first light. The climb is about 3 km up an alpine meadow, steep and tiring at altitude, with few resting spots. There is no water on the trail, so carry 2 litres. Head toward the saddle on the ridge. If you drift off line, you approach the peak from a much steeper side. From the saddle, turn right and continue along the ridge. The first elevated points are not the summit, and the true top is the third one, covered with loose boulders. Enjoy the views, then return to the summit camp.
Retrace your route to Solang, then drive to Manali. Keep your onward plans flexible in case of weather or road delays, and plan travel only after [time].
Patalsu is graded easy to moderate, but in winter you should expect:
Fitness target: Work towards 5 km in about 40 minutes, or 20 km of cycling in an hour, for 6–8 weeks beforehand. If you are 45 or older, plan for a little extra margin and speak with your doctor. Add squats, lunges and step-ups for the steep climbs.
| Month | What to expect |
|---|---|
| December | Cold, clear days; snow from the tree line upward |
| January | Coldest, with deep snow and a full winter summit |
| February | Excellent snow; still very cold |
| March | Snow on the upper slopes, softer lower down |
Snowfall varies each year, so keep your dates flexible and book early for the Christmas and New Year weeks.
