Aancha Top in Winter: Snow Ridges Without the Crowds

Among the best winter treks in India, most of the attention goes to the same few names. Aancha Top sits in the quieter Yamunotri Valley of Uttarakhand and offers the same ingredients: snow forests, white meadows, frozen lakes and a summit with a full circle of Himalayan peaks.

The summit is at about 12,500 ft (12,525 ft). The trek is graded easy to moderate, and the whole route is about 24 km over six days (four trekking days plus two travel days). If you have done Kedarkantha Trek or Dayara Bugyal Trek and want somewhere less busy, this is a natural next step. It is also a good first snow trek in India for a fit beginner. With ThinAirExpedition, you walk it with a trained team, proper winter equipment and a plan built around snow conditions.

Why Trek Aancha Top in Winter?

  • A real snow summit. From December to February the ridge, meadows and campsites are under snow. Few easy-to-moderate treks give you a summit like this.
  • Three glacial lakes in one day. Under snow, the meadows at Dinnala Bugyal turn into a wide white plain, and the lakes sit in the middle of it.
  • A 360° panorama. You see Bandarpoonch and Swargarohini on one side, and the Gangotri group (Srikantha, Gangotri I and III, Jogin, Jaonli) and Kedarnath on the other. On a clear day, the meadows of Dayara and Gidara show too.
  • Far fewer trekkers. Winter is the quietest season on this route.
  • A village start. You begin at Ranachatti, with terraced fields, shepherd huts and the carved Someshwar Mahadev temple.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Dehradun to Ranachatti (about 160–175 km, 6–7 hours)

The road climbs past Mussoorie, then follows the Yamuna river along NH 507. You turn toward Barkot, then join the Yamunotri route. Just before Ranachatti, the twin tops of Dinnala Bugyal (Jhandi Top and Aancha Top) come into view. You overnight at [homestay / guest house] in the village. Take a short walk and see the temple if time allows.

Day 2: Ranachatti to Bamsingh (4 km, 3–4 hours, 7,000 ft to 9,200 ft)

This is a steady climb with no technical sections. The trail goes through terraced fields, then oak forest. You pass Ganga Ram Ji's Chhani (the halfway point) and the Coin Tree, where the meadows of Dinnala first appear. Campsites near Bamsingh have water close by. Snow may begin to appear in the forest in colder weeks.

Day 3: Bamsingh to Dinnala Camp (4–5 km, about 4 hours, 9,200 ft to 10,750 ft)

You descend briefly to cross the Daloti Gad stream, then climb steeply for about an hour to the clearing of Sannodi. From there the trees thin, the meadows open up and the Bandarpoonch and Swargarohini ranges come into view. In winter this is often your first day on proper snow. The meadow is a good place to watch the evening light on the peaks.

Day 4: Summit Day, Dinnala to Aancha Camp via Aancha Top (about 8 km, 7–8 hours)

This is the main day and an early start. You pass the first and largest glacial lake, then two smaller ones, then climb onto the ridge. You walk the ridge for about 2 km to the summit at roughly 12,500 ft. After the summit you return past the lakes and cross the Jajar Gad stream to Aancha Camp (about 11,400 ft). There is no water source on this stretch, so carry about 2 litres. Parts of the ridge are narrow and rocky, and the descent has some steep, unmarked shortcuts, so careful footwork matters.

Day 5: Aancha Camp to Ranachatti (6 km, 5–6 hours, 11,400 ft to 7,000 ft)

A long descent through rhododendron, pine, birch and oak, past the clearing at Pokhari Thathar, then back to Ganga Ram Ji's Chhani and the fields above the village. Bandarpoonch stays in view for much of the way down. It's tough on the knees, so poles help.

Day 6: Ranachatti to Dehradun (about 6 hours)

Drive back, arriving in the evening. Plan onward travel from Dehradun only after about 8 PM, since mountain roads can cause delays. Keep a spare day in your plans if you can.

How Hard Is the Aancha Top Winter Trek?

The official grade is easy to moderate, but winter changes the trek in several ways.

  • Day 2 is the first test. You gain about 2,000 ft in 4 km, which is steady uphill work.
  • Summit day is the hardest. It is long, with a narrow ridge, loose rock and a steep descent. Snow and frost make the footing slower and trickier.
  • Fresh snow slows the group. Where tracks are buried, the team may need to break a new trail.
  • Water. Streams may freeze, so the team melts snow or uses other sources.
  • Weather decisions. Your trek leader may delay, shorten or turn back from any point if conditions turn unsafe. Please follow those calls.
  • Exit and medical access. There is no alternative exit route once you are on the trail. The nearest hospital for serious cases is in Mussoorie or Dehradun, 8–9 hours from Ranachatti. This is why we have the team, oxygen and first-aid equipment with you throughout.

Fitness target: Aim to cover 5 km in about 35–40 minutes (brisk walk or jog) at least three times a week for 6–8 weeks before the trek. Add squats, lunges and step-ups for leg strength.

Altitude: Above 10,000 ft, altitude sickness can affect anyone, including fit trekkers. Drink plenty of water, rest well at camp and tell your leader early if you get a headache, nausea or dizziness.

Best Time for Aancha Top (Winter Focus)

Month What to expect
December Cold and clear, with light-to-moderate snow at higher camps
January Coldest month, deep snow, a full winter summit
February Excellent snow and views, still very cold
March Snow higher up, melting below; first rhododendron buds late in the month

The route can be trekked in other seasons too (spring for rhododendron, autumn for golden meadows), but it is not recommended in July–August because of heavy rain and slippery trails. Snowfall changes each year, so keep your dates flexible.
