The Pinnacle of the Suru Valley: Mt. Kun Expedition (7,077m)

The Mt. Kun Expedition is a tough high altitude challenge in the remote Zanskar region of Ladakh. Mt. Kun is one of the peaks in India at 7,077 metres and you need to be very well prepared and disciplined to take it on.

The route to the top is long and hard, it involves walking on glaciers, setting up camps in areas and spending a lot of time above 5,500–6,000 metres. The climb is not super technical. The high altitude, bad weather and need to keep going for a long time make it very difficult. The winds can be very strong, the temperatures can be extremely cold or hot and the days when you are trying to reach the summit are very long.

The biggest challenge of Mt. Kun is dealing with the altitude for a long time and getting very tired. Every time you go up and down to get used to the altitude you have to recover and to make it to the top you need to be patient in physical shape and pace yourself carefully.

This expedition is best for people who want to climb high mountains like those that are 7000–8000 m high or for those who want a serious high altitude experience in the Himalayas.

The Mount Kun expeditions give you 23 days to explore the wilderness of the Himalayas. Have an experience that you will remember for the rest of your life. To climb this mountain you need to have some knowledge of technical mountaineering like how to use ice axes, crampons and ropes. Also experienced climbers know what the expedition demands, they train to be strong mentally and physically to deal with all the challenges on the way to the top.

When you finally reach the top of Mount Kun you will see a view of other famous peaks , like the Karakoram Range, Kashmir Valley, Ladakh Valley, Nun Peak and Zanskar Range. The beautiful view will make you forget all your tiredness and worries.

The Anatomy of the Climb

Mt. Kun is a massive mountain. To climb it you need to take your time setting up camps to move up the mountain safely.

● The Base Camp (Shafat Glacier): You can reach this camp from the village of Tangol. It will be your home for a week. The air here is already thin. You will be surrounded by moraine and ice.

● The Technical Wall: Between Camp 1 and Camp 2 there is a snow and ice wall. It is very steep with gradients of 50–70 degrees. Climbers need to use fixed ropes. They must also know how to use ascenders for meters.

● The Massive Snow Plateau: After climbing the wall you will reach a snow plateau. It is one of the largest in the Himalayas. You need to cross this plateau to reach the summit camp. You must be roped up and very focused.

● The Summit Ridge: The final climb is long and hard. You will climb a spur. At 7,000m every breath is an achievement. The view, from the top is amazing. You can see the Karakoram range to the North and the Great Himalayas to the South.

The ThinAirExpedition Spirit of Trekking

We're always ready for adventure

Trekking comes with uncertainty. Weather, terrain, and setbacks are part of the journey. We embrace them with resilience and openness—each challenge makes us stronger and more appreciative of nature's beauty.

We embrace low-noise trekking

We blend into nature, not the other way around. We avoid shouting, loud music, and noisy games. In silence, we hear birdsong, streams, and the wind—inviting peace, reflection, and a deeper connection with nature.

We protect the environment

We protect the environment by minimising waste, reusing resources, and picking up litter. We carry eco-bags, segregate waste, and inspire others to preserve trails. Sustainable trekking ensures these mountains remain beautiful for future generations.

We are self-sufficient

We carry our load as much as possible, manage our gear, and stay prepared for all situations. Self-sufficiency builds confidence, independence, and respect for fellow trekkers, support staff, and the trail itself.

We support each other

Trekking is not a solo act. We wait for each other, share burdens, and uplift teammates. By putting the group first, we build strong bonds and help everyone complete the trek joyfully.

We are fit and prepared

We train well before our treks. This helps us walk longer, handle emergencies, and contribute to the team. Fitness ensures we are never a burden and always ready to help when needed.
