Kashmir Great Lakes Trek (KGL)

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is really something. People often call it the "IMAX of trekking" because it is a journey through the middle of the Kashmir Himalayas. You get to see a lot of things on this 75 kilometer trip. The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek takes you through the heart of the Kashmir Himalayas.

There are a lot of things about the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. One of the things is that you can see seven different alpine lakes in just one week. The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is the trek in

India where you can do this. When you walk from the birch forests of Nichnai to the shores of Gangabal it feels like you are walking through a cool nature movie. The views are so good that it feels like you are seeing everything in definition.

Highlights

● The Gadsar Pass is really cool. It is 13,800 feet high. You can see the whole Karakoram range from the top. The Gadsar Pass is a part of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek.

● The Twin Lakes are another thing, about the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. It is really cool to see the sun rise over Vishansar and Kishansar at the time.

● Gangabal and Nandkol are also great. You get to camp at the base of Mt. Harmukh, which's a really big mountain. The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is an experience.

Tarsar Marsar Trek

Tarsar Marsar is like a queen. It is in the Aru Valley. This trek is known for its green fields and the chance to camp right by a high-up lake.

This trek is special. The lakes, Tarsar and Marsar change color. They go from green to dark blue. This happens because of the way the sun shines. People think the campsites here are the beautiful in the Himalayas.

Highlights:

Lakeside Camping: You can sleep right by Tarsar Lake. The water is clear like glass.

The Ridge Walk: You walk across a ridge between the two lakes. You can see valleys, like Dachigam.

Shepherd Culture: You can meet the Gujjar and Bakarwal tribes. They come here in the summer. You can see how they live.

Warwan Valley Trek

If you want to get from it all this trek is for you. It takes you from the Suru Valley to the desert of Ladakh. This trek is one of the geographically diverse in India.

What draws people here is the isolation. You will walk through villages that do not have roads. You will see a side of Kashmir that seems frozen in time. The mountains here are huge and beautiful.

Highlights:

Lomvilad Pass: It is tough to climb to 14,500 feet. It is worth it.

The Glacier Traverse: You will walk on the big cracked Bracken Glacier.

The Transition: You will see the landscape change from Kashmir, to the rough beauty of Ladakh.

Nafran Valley Trek

Nafran Valley is a place to trek if you want to see beautiful untouched mountains. It is not well known so you can have the trails to yourself. The climb is short but steep. You get to see landscapes that look like they are from a long, long time ago.

The valley is surrounded by mountains and glaciers. It feels like you are discovering something because you rarely see other people on the trail unlike in Sonamarg.

Highlights:

Harnag Lake: This lake is a blue color and is right on the edge of a big cliff.

Kolahoi Views: You get to see the Kolahoi Glacier close. People call it the "Matterhorn of Kashmir."

Alpine Flora: The valley floor has rare flowers and herbs that are good, for medicine. Nafran Valley has many of these flowers and herbs.

Tulian Lake Trek

This trek starts from the meadows of Pahalgam. It is a climb to a high altitude lake that is frozen for most of the year. The Tulian Lake Trek is a choice for people who do not have a lot of time but want to have a big adventure.

The Tulian Lake is special because it is shaped like a figure-8. There are three peaks around the Tulian Lake that are over 15,000 feet high. In late July you can see big chunks of ice floating in the Tulian Lake. This makes the Tulian Lake look like it is in the Arctic. It is really in the middle of Kashmir.

Highlights:

Steep Ascent: The climb to the Tulian Lake is very hard. Will test how strong your lungs and legs are.

Baisaran Meadows: You get to walk through the Baisaran Meadows on the way, to the Tulian Lake. The Baisaran Meadows are often called the "Mini Switzerland" of Kashmir.

The Blue Ice: When you get to the Tulian Lake you can see the blue color of the frozen water. The Tulian Lake is very pretty. People like to see the blue ice.

For treks that're a bit harder like Kashmir Great Lakes, Tarsar Marsar and Tulian Lake you need to be in better shape. Start getting ready a couple of months before your trek. Go for hikes, climb stairs, ride a bike and go for runs. Also practice carrying a backpack that weighs 8-10 kg.

For tough treks like Warwan Valley and Brammah Valley you need to be very fit. Start training a month before your trek. Go for hikes, camp at high altitudes and try to do at least one easier Himalayan trek first.

Here is a list of things you need to bring:

● Trekking poles which're very helpful when crossing high passes and going down steep hills

Permits and Documents for 2026

If you are not from India you need a permit to trek in some areas of Jammu and Kashmir. If you are from India you do not need a permit but you should always carry your government ID with you. For the Brammah Valley Trek you need to get permission from the government office first. Your trek operator will take care of all the permits when you book your trek.

Trekking Responsibly in Kashmir 2026

Kashmir's mountains are very beautiful and fragile. We need to be careful so that we do not hurt the environment. Follow the rules: take all your trash with you, use the toilets, do not pick wildflowers and respect the animals. Try to help the economy by using local operators buying food and supplies from the villages and being respectful of the local culture. Many trek operators now include lessons on how to protect the environment and give money to conservation groups.

Mountain Safety And Ethics

Acclimatization is really important. You should drink a lot of water like three to four liters every day. We make sure to have some days in our plans so your body can get used to the thin air in the mountains.

Leave No Trace is a deal for us. We do not want to leave any trash behind. So whatever you bring with you you have to take it with you when you leave.

You should always respect local culture. Just saying hello or "Salaam" to the Gujjar shepherds is a thing to do.
