Best Treks in Kashmir – Complete Guide to Kashmir Trekking Tours

Kashmir has long been celebrated as the "Paradise on Earth," but for the modern adventurer, that paradise isn't found in the crowded markets of Srinagar—it is etched into the high-altitude silence of the Himalayas. Trekking in Kashmir is a transformative experience where every ridge crossed reveals a new world of turquoise glacial lakes, wildflower-laden meadows (margs), and towering peaks that have stood as silent sentinels for millennia.

At ThinAirExpedition we think a trekking tour should be more than a hike. It should let you really experience the beauty of the mountains.

From the Great Lakes" circuit to the untouched Warwan Valley in Kashmir you'll find many different types of terrain.

Kashmir offers a variety of landscapes that're as good as any other trekking spot in the world.

Whether you are new to trekking and want to try the Himalayas for the time or you are an experienced climber looking for a tough challenge this guide has everything you need to plan your 2026 trip. It covers all the details, for an expedition.

The Iconic Classics: Alpine Lake Expeditions

1. Kashmir Great Lakes Trek (KGL)

If you are looking for an amazing trek to do in India, the Kashmir Great Lakes trek is the one. This trek is a trip that takes you across three big mountain passes and seven huge lakes in the mountains. Each of the lakes is special like the lakes of Vishansar and Kishansar and the big lake of Gangabal which is at the foot of Mt. Harmukh.

The amazing view from Gadsar Pass, which's very high up at 13,800 feet, where you can see the path you have walked on going back into the distance like a line, through the green trees.

Highlight: Seeing the sun go down over Nandkol Lake with the big rocky face of Harmukh changing color to orange and gold. The Kashmir Great Lakes trek is really something and the lakes are a big part of what makes it so great.

2. Tarsar Marsar trek

Tarsar Marsar is really the beautiful trek in India. It is in the Lidder Valley. This trek is different from the KGL trek. The KGL trek is a circle.. Tarsar Marsar feels more like a special walk just for you. The lakes here are shaped like almonds. They are close to the mountains. You will feel like you found a place.

Best For: People who like to take pictures and those who want to walk. The campsites are really nice..

Highlight: The walk on the ridge, to Sundersar is great. You can see two lakes from one place. It is a nice view. You can put up your tent on the shore of Tarsar Lake. You can wake up to the sound of water on the rocks

The Untamed Frontiers: Offbeat & Remote Valleys

1. Warwan Velley Trek

This is not a hike it is a big adventure in the wilderness. The Warwan Valley trek is one of the interesting trails in the country it takes you from the high desert of the Suru Valley to the beautiful green forests of Kashmir.

Best For: People who have been on a lot of treks and want to be alone and have a time.

Highlight: When you go down into the village of Sukhnai you will see that the people and the houses are still the same as they were a time ago. The Warwan Valley trek is an experience and the Warwan Valley trek will show you many amazing things.

You get to cross the Lomvilad Pass which is really high, at 14,500 feet and walk on the big Bracken Glacier this is something that not many people who go on treks get to do.

2. The Nafran Valley trek

The Nafran Valley trek is a cool place that not many people know about. It is a climb but it is worth it because you get to see the Kolahoi Glacier up close which is where the Lidder River comes from.

Best For: People who like to trek and do not like being around a lot of people they want to feel like they are in the mountains a long time ago.

Highlight: The Nafran Valley trek is close, to the Kolahoi Massif some people call the Kolahoi Massif the "Matterhorn of Kashmir" because the Kolahoi Massif has a lot of sharp points and looks like a pyramid.Reaching the shores of Harnag Lake, a sapphire-blue body of water that sits in a bowl of vertical rock walls.

Short & Soulful: Weekend & Low-Altitude Treks

1. Tulian Lake trek

Starting from Pahalgam the Tulian Lake trek is a climb to a lake that is 12,000 feet high. The lake is often filled with floating ice blocks in summer.

Highlight: You will see a change from the thick pine forests of Baisaran to the high-altitude rocky area, around the Tulian Lake.

2. Marchoi trek

When winter comes most people stop going on trekking tours in Kashmir. The Marchoi trek is different. It is actually really nice during this time. The Marchoi trek starts at the ruins of Naranag. You walk along the river. See a lot of deep snow and really cold landscapes.

Best For: People who love winter and people who like history.

Highlight: You get to see the Naranag Temple ruins that are, over 1,000 years old. They are covered in new snow from the Himalayas. The Marchoi trek is really something because of this. The Marchoi trek and the Naranag Temple ruins are a combination for people to see.
